"Izzy Sez - Cycling
IS... Fun with the correct style of bike"
The connection between cycling
style, position and comfort
Choosing
an appropriate riding angle is a good initial step in choosing
a bike. This is more likely to guide you to one which will be comfortable.
This will ensure you gain enjoyment from your bike - rather than
assigning it to the darkest recesses of the garage or shed.
In most cases adopting a very
upright position is a mistake - this position places much more
weight on your bum and you are therefore more likely to suffer
from saddle soreness. Leaning forward, your arms can take some
of your weight.
Handlebars should be about the same width as your shoulders. Adjustable handlebar
stems help you fine tune your riding position. Incorrect saddle height can
make cycling harder than necessary and result in knee pain. Too high and you
will be stretching, too low and your legs won't deliver their full power.
A
good starting point is to put the heel of your foot (with shoes)
onto the pedal at its lowest point, your leg should have only a
slight bend. Pedal backwards and your hips shouldn't rock from
side to side. If they do, lower the saddle until they don't.
Choose a saddle that's right
for your shape, sex and style of riding. It will make the cycling
experience more enjoyable. If you are a female first and foremost
have a ladies saddle fitted because the bones on which women sit
- the ischial tuberosities - are wider apart and therefore need
greater support than men's. A woman's saddle is wider at the rear.
